Upgrade Your Existing Home to Homestar Standards
Practical, evidence-based upgrades to improve comfort, health, energy efficiency and Homestar performance in existing homes across New Zealand.

Step 1 – Introductory Contact (Free)
We start with a brief conversation to understand your home, project goals and timeframe. We explain how Homestar works and which service option suits you best.
Step 2 – Site Visit & Existing Home Survey
We organise a detailed site visit and survey. We document the current building envelope, insulation, windows, heating, ventilation and layout, as well as measurements and key construction details.
Step 3 – Homestar Design & Modelling
Using the survey data, we build a Homestar model of your home and test different improvement options. We then prepare a clear scope list of recommendations (e.g. options to reach Homestar 6, 7, etc.) tailored to your budget and priorities.
Step 4 – Architectural Design
Based on the Homestar model prepared by our licensed Homestar Designer, we develop an architectural design aligned with your targeted Homestar rating and sustainability goals. This stage covers the full design process — from concept design through developed design and detailed documentation, right through to Building Consent approval. All key sustainability measures identified in the Homestar modelling are integrated into the design to support the intended performance outcome. We can also accommodate your personal requirements that go beyond the minimum recommendations for Homestar.
Step 5 – Assessment & Certification
We complete the full Homestar assessment, documentation and submission to the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) to obtain official Homestar certification.
** The construction phase is carried out entirely by a third-party building contractor, selected at the client’s discretion.
SCOHO Limited does not act as a builder or contractor and is not involved in the physical construction works.
Clients are free to appoint their preferred construction company, and SCOHO can, if required, provide design clarifications and technical support during the build to help ensure alignment with the approved design and targeted Homestar performance.
